Bodum Revamp

This project takes place within Studio 4 under professor Reid Schlegel, titled " So You Want to be a Consultant ?". In this project, each student is assigned an existing brand to design a product for, simulating a real in-life design consultancy firm.

 

Presentation was delivered to design consultancy firms Aruliden and Frog to simulate client presentations. 

Bodum

Bodum is a French- Scandinavian brand which specializes in appliances and known for their iconic French Press coffee maker.

Product lines of Bodum are beverage centred, assisting in the creation of drinks and providing a zen experience to its users.

Market Opportunity

After surveying different appliance and home goods stores, Bodum was found to be falling behind in the automated home machine market.

 

This birthed the idea of creating a new product which other brands have not created yet. The chosen industry for Bodum to enter was Boba Tea.

Design Principles

A mood board was created with key words : collaborative, tasteful, and various are used to guide the desired aesthetic of Bodum's iconic style while still keeping the essence of being designed for homemade Boba Milk Tea. 

Concept I

Concept I is titled "Fruitful Interaction", designed to invite actions from the user, yet bring entertainment throughout the making process. This is executed through clear class for viewing the Boba Milk Tea being made, along with buttons which stand out.

Concept II

Concept II is titled "Lucid Activation", which brings a more subtle and relaxed approach to making Boba Tea. This exhibited a hidden making process accompanied by a designated spot for both boba and tea to be delivered when finished.

Concept Direction

After receiving feedback and further discussion, Concept I was chosen to push further into a final product for its celebratory and welcoming experience, which would be more attractive towards Bodum users, and matches the interaction of Bodum's iconic French Press products.

Refinement

Concept I was driven further into the design process to fit a more home-made body and reach the industrial standard to be a new hero product for Bodum.

Redesign focused on the following elements : 

​ - space conserving form 

 - executing a mess- free experience

 - minimizing negative space of the body

 - embody a more inviting and industrial aesthetic

Icons

Icons were designed to match the graphic style of existing Bodum products, specifically favoring icons over words. Minimalism was favored in this scenario in order to push a new hero product for the brand.

Preparation

The Boba Milktea process uses ingredients which are bought from traditional korean groceries.

Lines are indicated on each chamber to determine 

amount of ingredients between one serving or two.

Process

The process is traditionally made by hand, and requires multiple steps such as heating the Boba pearls and swirling milktea repeatedly.

Both pearls and milktea were combined into a homemade machine to provide an automated and easy process.

Uncooked Boba pearls, milk, and powered flavor are loaded into the chambers.

A swirler lies beneath each chamber to heat and mix the ingredients until cooked.

A finished and cooked set of Boba pearls and flavored Milktea are completed and ready for serving.

Features

Removable drip tray to catch spilled Boba Milktea. 

Removable splash shield to protect splashing when Boba falls into the serving.

Components can be removed for cleaning and easier storage.

Line Extension

An additional product was made to further assist Bodum's branding. A notable gap in Bodum's product line was the high focus in beverages, however seldom products which compliment drinks. 

This provided the opportunity to design an ice tray for Bodum.

To be consistent and celebrate Bodum's design language, the dotted grids on many Bodum products were translated into a stencil for spherical ice to be added into beverages for Bodum users.

Revamp

The design of two products concludes the project and brings a new light to Bodum as a brand. 

Bodum now has a new hero product and has outrun its competitors into a new industry:  a Boba Milktea maker to provide homemade Boba Milktea to users, and its very own Ice tray to compliment the various beverages made by the other product lines of Bodum.
